Bauxite demand is closely tied to the aluminium industry. Aluminium is widely used in transportation (automobiles, airplanes), construction, and packaging. The growing focus on sustainable materials like lightweight aluminium is pushing demand, especially in the electric vehicle (EV) and renewable energy sectors.
Global Demand
The global bauxite market was valued at around $12.2 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach approximately $20.66 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 6.1%. Bauxite is primarily used for aluminium production, which is critical for the transportation (including electric vehicles), packaging, and construction sectors. By 2025, global aluminium demand is expected to exceed 100 million tons, requiring significant bauxite resources.
National Demand
India ranks 5th in global bauxite production, with about 22 million metric tons of production in 2022. Domestic demand for bauxite is closely tied to aluminium, and India’s aluminium consumption is projected to grow at 8-10% annually, driven by the rise in automotive, packaging, and energy infrastructure.
Reserves in India
India is the 5th largest producer of bauxite, with reserves concentrated in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. The total bauxite reserves stand at around 3.5 billion tons.
